The hundredth monkey effect is a hypothetical phenomenon in which a new behavior or idea is said to spread rapidly by unexplained means from one group to all related groups once a critical number of members of one group exhibit the new behavior or acknowledge the new idea.) “Scientists were conducting a study of macaque monkeys on the Japanese island of Kōjima in 1952. These scientists observed that some of these monkeys learned to wash sweet potatoes in the water, and once a critical number of these monkeys was reached, i.e., the hundredth monkey, this previously learned practice instantly spread across the water to other troupes of monkeys on nearby islands without any contact between the troupes. This phenomenon correlates to the information cascade model in that it shows how ideas can spread quickly once they hit a certain level of acceptance” - Cornell University Course blog for INFO 2040/CS 2850/Econ 2040/SOC 2090
What is Tacoma's "100th Monkey"? The 100th Monkey is a Tacoma arts tradition started by Lynn Di Nino roughly twenty years ago. It flourished as a series of "art parties" where Tacoma artists met regularly to share their work and engage with each other. One hundred "art tiles", or small art pieces, were created for each event, and either sold or distributed as collectible artifacts, showcasing the talented artists of the Tacoma art scene. Overtime, the 100th Monkey art events began to wane in their consistency, and eventually the events stopped. But five years of dormancy brought new blood into the mix, and the much loved art events began to spring up once again. This time the events were organized by a small group of committed artists, as well as a team of people within the Tacoma Artists Collective. The events were organized as art exhibitions, each with a theme, and with an open call to Tacoma area artists. A featured artist would be chosen to create the 100 small pieces, keeping that tradition alive. For nearly ten years since its resurgence, The 100the Monkey has continued to bring artists and their work together, while exposing them to the public. The exhibits have attracted wonderful crowds, showing the diversity and power of Tacoma's creative spirit.
According to the Cambridge English dictionary ‘silver lining’ means - an advantage that comes from a difficult or unpleasant situation: Artists can take that meaning and interpret it as they will. We will be taking art pieces to present on June 3rd. To enter a piece - just like our Facebook page, message us the name, art medium type, dimensions of the art piece and we will message back when it's time to drop off your work.
